Season 1, Ep. #13. Traveling for 6 months with 3 children: Dorothée's daring bet
At Kallisto , we believe that mothers have the right to dream big. To live strong. To think outside the box. And sometimes… to pack their bags for six months with their children. 🌍
In this episode of the Kallisto Club , we turned the mic over to Dorothée Gabai , a Brussels-based entrepreneur, mother of three, and founder of the Osez votre voyage community. In 2022, she put everything on hold—her home, her landmarks, her comforts—to explore Latin America with her family. The result? A journey of discovery, joyful, sometimes chaotic, but above all, transformative.
What if you too could dare?
🌿 A mom “like everyone else”… who just decided to go for it
Dorothée says it herself:
“I’m not an adventurer. I’m a mother who simply wanted to experience something special with her children.”
No round-the-world cycling trip, no plan laid out two years in advance. Just a deep desire. An intuition to follow. And a lot of logistical work to make it possible.
She and her children, ages 3, 6, and 9, are traveling for six months across Latin America, including Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, and Bolivia. With her husband, who works remotely, they're adapting the pace, finding the best Wi-Fi connections, renting accommodations where he can work remotely, and organizing homeschooling for their children.
"Don't think we threw everything away on a whim. It's a real family project. We've been preparing for this for months."
Traveling with three children: a surprise around every corner
Many people think that such a trip with children is impossible. Dorothée will tell you otherwise:
“I was amazed by their adaptability. We offered them a night bus or a boat to cross a border: they just said, ‘OK.’ As long as they had an ice cream from time to time and a playground, everything was fine.”
She also talks about how the children were "human passports" during the journey. They opened hearts, doors, and conversations.
"Traveling with children is like a map. People approached us more easily, helped us, and were kind."
Powerful memories, not always where you expect them
The most powerful thing isn't necessarily the picture-postcard landscapes. It's the encounters, the small moments of everyday life, the amazed looks of children in a local school or during a simple bus ride.
“I wanted them to see other ways of living. To understand that there are a thousand ways of being in the world.”
And there were also those moments of surpassing:
"We climbed in Patagonia to Laguna de los Tres, a very demanding hike. My 7-year-old daughter lasted until the end, with incredible energy. It was a magical moment."
🌍 Travel as a tool for education (and introspection)
Dorothée tells how she transformed the trip into a living school for her children.
Between active teaching, observing the world, learning Spanish, and visiting local schools, she integrated everyday discoveries into their learning. And into her own, too.
“This trip was an encounter with the world, but also with myself. I have never felt so alive.”
🧳 An organization (almost) like a vacation… only bigger
Of course, going to the other side of the world for six months requires preparation.
In the episode, Dorothée shares everything she would have liked to know before leaving:
administrative papers, vaccinations, insurance, temporary school dropout, suitcases (4 t-shirts, 2 pairs of pants each!), good tools for getting organized, tips for making everyday life easier...
“What helped me the most wasn't the guides. It was the other families. I found my answers in their stories, their experiences, their advice. That's why I wanted to create Dare Your Journey.”
✨ Dare to travel: a project born on the road
Upon returning, the shock was harsh. The Belgian skies in January didn't help. The children quickly returned to their lives, but Dorothée felt out of step. So she created Osez votre voyage : a hybrid project, part community, part event, and part support platform.
“I wanted to help other families take the plunge, organize their trip, but also reconnect with their deepest desires.”
She therefore organizes travelers' aperitifs , a festival in Brussels , thematic meetings on vanlife, solo travel, family itineraries, and is now thinking about short formats (weekends, stays) to live the adventure even without going to the ends of the earth .
